for the love of white rock lake!
White Rock Lake has always been a special place for me because I grew up in Dallas. I really started to have a relationship with it my senior year of high school, and it has continued ever since. I love White Rock because it is perfect for any occasion, whether that be walking your dog, going on a date, having a picnic with your friends and then going on a nature hike, slack lining, or just nature watching! Over the past three years, and especially during quarantine, I spent a lot of time outside and at White Rock Lake because it is such a special place to me.
Another great thing about White Rock is that it is also a place for performing! My boyfriend's parents are clowns, and every fall they put up a circus called the Petite Palace right on the lakeside (their info is on Facebook--check it out!). It's such a wonderful place for the event because it's so easy to put up the tent and enjoy the circus while leaving no trace on the environment when it is over besides a couple of stray pieces of popcorn the ducks will have as a midnight snack. Two years ago, Petite Palace occurred during a very rainy season, and the entire circus tent flooded during a performance, making the show more of a water circus than a regular one. This just goes to show that nature really has no boundaries, not even a canvas tent, and will do whatever it wants without regards for humans.
I took this panoramic this weekend when my boyfriend and I had a picnic date at the lake. I love this view because you can see how much character this specific spot on the lake has; there were others picnicing, biking, fishing, and even kayaking in the lake. Other spots of White Rock have different personalities, but this spot is one of my favorites because you can enjoy the view and then go on a little hike afterwards, which is what we decided to do.
I also included "'For the Love of White Rock Lake!' Day," because I think it is such a fun piece of history about the lake.
"On Dec. 3, 1995, Mayor Ron Kirk proclaimed the day For the Love of White Rock Lake Day. The formal proclamation sits east of the old boathouse. The text reads more like a poem than a municipal document, featuring lines such as, 'WHEREAS, White Rock Lake offers the souls of young and old alike the emotional refreshment of curving shoreline, green spaces, cool thickets, gentle breezes, bridal paths, diamond reflections of sun on water, pastel dawns and blazing sunsets, all against the striking silhouette of our downtown skyline …' and 'WHEREAS, White Rock Lake lays claim to the lore of the Lady of the Lake …'”
